The African Engineering Education Fellows (AEEF) in the Diaspora envisions a participatory model of mentorship for African students to participate in Engineering Education research.
Since 2024, we have been running a pilot model of collaborative mentored research with a faculty member in a Nigerian University to provide mentorship to two undergraduate students on the theory and practice of engineering education research. This summer, we are pleased to expand our model by kicking off a webinar series and mentorship program for undergraduate students in Africa.
The goal of this project is to
- excite students and faculty about the world of engineering education research,
- introduce the tremendous benefits of engineering education research, and
- begin a matching process for interested parties.
The intended participants of this webinar are engineering students and faculty with varied years of teaching and learning experience in Engineering programs in African universities.
AEEF operates a participatory model of intervention. This means that we do not prescribe what our partners need. Instead, we collaborate by fostering a conversation that begins by understanding what they need. To design an experience that will be truly impactful to the participants, we have designed a survey to ascertain what participants want to gain from the experience and a survey to capture the interests of AEEF Diaspora members regarding mentorship. The following image is a model of our mentorship framework as it relates to the three major stakeholders
